Iceland

Imaging The Land of Ice and Fire, Iceland

I didn’t think Iceland could get any better than our past September photo workshop, but it has! That’s why I am very happy to announce my new ICELAND: Land of Fire and Ice Photo Workshop for 2016! The dates are set for June 28 to July 6, the prime time in Iceland to provide us with long days of summer sunshine and magical light, as well as many wildflower and wildlife opportunities. Not only will the season be milder, but the tour itself will be almost twice as long as my previous tour! We have added two glorious days on the spectacular Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and one day in the Borgarfjordur Fjord region. Please see the complete itinerary below and mark the dates on your calendar. I can guarantee that you will not want to miss this incredible opportunity!

Day 1 Arrival at Keflavík Airport – Reykjavik

Transfer from Keflavík airport to hotel in Reykjavik.
Group dinner and overnight in Reykjavík.

Day 2 Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The peninsula is about 90km long and known for its diverse landscape and magical beauty with Snæfellsjökull Glacier towering over the national park at the far end. It is believed the glacier is one of seven main energy centers of the earth and served as the setting for the famous work of Jules Verne, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The peninsula features a spectacular range of mountains, black and light sand beaches, craters, lava fields, fjords, fishing villages, geothermal areas, mineral springs, and cliffs teeming with rich bird life.

Day 3 Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Today we drive to the northern side of the peninsula to the town of Stykkishólmur, the first community in Europe to get the Earth Check environmental certification. Stykkishólmur lies in a beautiful setting, with historic, charming, and well-preserved old houses in the town centre. We continue to Bjarnarhöfn, an interesting shark museum where you can taste the shark product from their farm. The owner, Hildibrandur, welcomes us with his charm and gives us the grand tour. Kirkjufell is the well-known landmark for the town of Grundarfjörður, and is believed by many to be the most beautiful mountain in Iceland!

Day 4 – Borgarfjörður Fjord

– Hraunfossar Waterfalls – Húsafell

The Borgarfjörður region is regarded as the setting for most of the Icelandic sagas and the area’s landscape, nature, and culture reflect this heritage. Húsafell is a unique natural area covered with forest is and close to the Langjökull Glacier. We drive to Hraunfossar Lava Falls, a beautiful and unusual natural phenomenon. Clear, cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and runs in falls and rapids to the Hvítá River.

Day 5 Þingvellir National Park

– Geysir Hot Spring – Gullfoss Waterfall

Þingvellir National Park is a remarkable geological site, and the most historic region on the island. The Þingvellir area is part of a fissure zone running through Iceland, being situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is a magnificent showcase with all its faults and fissures and the beautiful mountains around it. Then we continue to the world-famous Geysir region, where hot springs are in abundance, such as the famous great Geysir, whose name has been given to hot springs all over the world. From Geysir we drive to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Here we see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down through a double-fall into a deep gorge.

Day 6 Vík – Waterfalls – Reynisfjara Black Beach

We drive to the spectacular waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. We continue towards the coast to the basalt caves of Reynisfjara beach where we take a walk on the black beach and have a view looking towards Dyrhólaey. Reynisdrangar is made up of basalt sea stacks situated very near to Reynisfjara Beach and the village of Vík. According to legend, the Reynisdrangar needles were formed when two trolls were trying to drag a three-masted ship to land. When daylight broke they turned to stone. The needles can be seen clearly from the village of Vic and are 66 meters above sea level at their highest. Next stop is Dyrhólaey, a 120-meter high promontory not far from Vík, and is the southernmost part of Iceland. From the top you have a great photographic view.

Day 7 – 8 Skaftafell – Glacier Lagoon – Vatnajökull Glacier

The contrast in the nature of Southeast Iceland is breathtaking, with spectacular black beaches and the dominating icy-white glacier Vatnajökull. Serenity, energy, and forces of nature combine to make the region of Vatnajökull a never-to-be-forgotten experience.  We will explore the region, visit the stunning Skaftafell. This is Iceland’s second-largest national park where the landscape has been formed over thousands of years by the powerful influences of volcanic eruptions and glacial movement. There is also an eye-opening boat tour on the Jökulsárlón, a famous glacial lagoon full of icebergs. Dinner and overnight in the area.

Day 9 Reykjanes peninsula – Þingvellir National Park

More than half of the Reykjanes peninsula is covered with lava flows and we will see lava cones and craters of various sizes and shapes. We will walk where the Mid-Atlantic ridge rises from the ocean before we head for the lighthouse on the westernmost tip of the peninsula. From there we will tour the small fishing village, Grindavík. In the afternoon we visit the Blue Lagoon, a unique natural pool of geothermal seawater (37-39°C) in the middle of a moss-covered lava field. You can walk in the spectacular surroundings, bathe in the milky blue-green water, relax in a geothermal steam bath, and release the stress from your shoulders under a Blue Lagoon waterfall.
